Everyone has been talking about it. The geeks and nerds have been waiting for it. And comic book fans have been crying for it. Now it is official: Zack Snyder, in a jam packed Hall H in San Diego Comic Con yesterday, announces a Superman sequel, and this time, the Man of Steel will be facing off with the Dark Knight himself. It is every DC fan boy’s dream realized. An idea so epic, even the Marvel fans are excited.

The announcement was revealed through actor Harry Lennix (who played General Swanwick in “Man of Steel”) reading a famous line from the graphic novel “The Dark Knight Returns”:

"I want you to remember, Clark. In all the years to come. In all your most private moments. I want you to remember my hand at your throat. I want you to remember the one man who beat you." To those who are familiar with the comics, this line was uttered by an older Batman after defeating Superman in a fist fight (Yes, a fist fight. That’s not a typo.).

After the dramatic reading, the lights go off, and the screen revealed the Superman shield, to the delight of the already screaming fans. The clamor goes louder after a bat logo shows behind, thus revealing the official logo for the Superman/Batman movie.

Synder makes it clear though, that the film will not follow the comic’s storyline, but he only used the line to illustrate the iconic faceoff between the two of the greatest superheroes. So far, no stories or plot has been revealed. But everybody knows the crossover between the two makes sense. In “Man of Steel”, Superman and General Zod destroyed a satellite belonging to Wayne Industries during the heat of their battle. It is only high time for Bruce Wayne to take notice of another super powered being going around. With Batman being so nosy (and untrusting), he will need the urge to find and face the Man of Steel himself.

And since Christian Bale already closed all windows for another Batman role, it is probable that another actor will play the Caped Crusader, and that Snyder’s universe will need to have a different take on Batman (as opposed to Nolan’s universe

This announcement harks us back to fans’ cry regarding the DC cinematic universe: Make a Superman/Batman crossover first, and then pave the way for a Justice League film.

So far, so good.
