The eastern Kansas mine seems to be the new and aspired place to build the doomsday proof bunker so that when it all finally goes down a few people who have anticipated these apocalyptic events and prepared for it will survive. But you wouldn't believe what it will cost to build a self-sustaining bunker that will keep people alive for at least 2 years. Money is not an issue for doomsday preppers when the fate of the human race is at stake or at least that's what they think that will happen. According to scientists two things could happen to human beings on Earth and 1 - is that they'll eventually go extinct due to the fact that the Earth will no longer be able to support the ever growing population and 2 - is a few humans will survive in doomsday bunkers after the ravaging onslaught on the surface.

There is a third option also that will force humans to explore star systems in order to find a new home(assuming nature won't be able to restore itself to its prime), but this is a costly and dangerous ambition as mankind has never gone farther than the moon in all its history. But if we'd find a way to transport ourselves lightyears away without killing ourselves in the process, then that might work too! I'd probably be homesick a lot if I'll be part of such a mission, I love Earth more than any other Earth-like planets. :)
