It is the final nail in the coffin of the fourth Dark Knight role when Christian Bale categorically confirmed that he will not be returning as Batman in case a Justice League film makes it through the development hell. That means another face will have to fit in the graphite-constructed mask of the Caped Crusader in the Batman vs. Superman (or Superman vs. Batman, depends who you ask) movie being helmed by Zack Snyder.

It is also important to mention that Snyder is opting for a more aging, veteran Batman than mostly a reboot of the character. And along down the road, few actors will surface either as rumored replacements or fan favorites to take up the Batsuit. Here are some of them. You be the judge.

Josh Brolin

If you don’t know how good this actor is, you are not paying enough attention. Currently the top contender, Brolin echoes the “aging Batman” Snyder wanted in his film. He can act well, and has previous sting playing DC’s ”Jonah Hex”. The guy also effectively played a younger Tommy Lee Jones in “Men in Black 3”, which means he really got the acting chops. And come on, look at that jaw line.

Ryan Gosling

Already past his pretty boy image, Gosling is trying to pull off a Leonardo DiCaprio and starring in a lot more mature and less than matinee idol roles, showcasing his well honed dramatic talent. Yes, you can have him worked out and bulked up, and will be a classy Bruce Wayne, but Gosling’s enduring pretty face will not just make a cut for a rugged Batman, let alone try to intimidate his enemies.

Matthew Goode

Goode is no stranger to “billionaire by day, superhero by night” roles, having starred as Adrian Veidt/Ozymandias in “Watchmen”, also directed by Snyder. He efficiently played the flamboyant, light-headed, happily-lying-on-his-money tycoon Veidt and the genius, dark, and vengeful superhero/villain Ozymandias, who is almost Batman’s equal when it comes to money, intellect, and badassery.

Richard Armitage

The 41-year-old Armitage impressed his bosses at Warner Bros. with his extraordinary performance as Thorin Oakenshield in “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” and its succeeding installments, and his stint in the British television drama series “Spooks”. Also, he had a minor stint as the Hydra agent who blew the lab in Marvel’s “Captain America: The First Avenger”. If Armitage would make the cut, he would be starring with fellow Brit Andrew Cavil.

Max Martini

Another perfect fit for a rugged, aging Bruce Wayne. Martini blew everyone’s mind in a starring role in Guillermo del Toro's “Pacific Rim”, playing the elder in a father-and-son Australian team. Coincidentally, his huge physique and well-kept hair reminds us of the old Batman in Alan Moore’s “The Dark Knight Returns”, a material Snyder is glad use.

Joe Manganiello

The possibilities of casting Manganiello reflects Warner Bros’ history of bringing in an unknown, less-bankable actor to play their iconic superheroes (read: Henry Cavill). Gifted with an already stunning anatomy (he was Flash Thompson to Toby Maguire’s Peter Parker in the previous Spider-Man movies), and a gruffy but still good looking façade, he may well very be our new Batman.
