Prom gown designs taken from the runways are becoming a thing of the past as more and more students prefer to design their own gowns - the better to conserve money and to bring out their own creativity. Now thanks to Kyemah McEntyre - the girl who designed her viral African-themed prom gown last year - more and more girls are loving the ethnic designs.

One such student is 17 year-old Mayalaya Zanders from Garfield Heights High School in Cleveland, Ohio. Unfortunately though, Zanders was told by the teacher that her design was “tacky for prom.” But that didn't discourage her from making the gown.

And aside from that one teacher, everyone else had praises for her beautiful royal blue java Ankara print gown which she collaborated with local designer DeAndre’ Crenshaw of IndelibleDC to make.

“Thank you to everyone who gave me kind words on my prom dress,” Mayalaya gushed after sharing this photo. “My dress was to make a point. That African style is beautiful. That I am comfortable with my Melanin and roots. And finally that there’s nothing like Black girl Magic.”
