With now a current death toll of 3,621 and still millions displaced and hungry in the Philippines, Hollywood stars, musicians, and sports personalities all twitted, expressed their support, and called for help for the country that was badly hit by one of history’s strongest storms ever.
This call was led by American singer Josh Groban, tweeting “My heart is heavy for the people of the Philippines tonight. Devastating.” Followed by The Lord of The Rings fame Elijah Wood saying “Millions of families in the Philippines need your help now. Donate to @WFP food relief http://bit.ly/HF1w5n @WFPUSA #Haiyan .”American R&B singer-songwriter Alicia Keys also tweeted “To the people of the Philippines my heart is with you #prayers #Haiyan ”.
Fomer American president Bill Clinton also expressed his support with a tweet “The people and families impacted by Typhoon #Haiyan need our help. Here are some ways to support the relief effort: http://wjcf.co/HSBED1 ”. This was followed by his wife and former United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton expressing “Text AID to 80108 to give $10 to the @mGiveFoundation to help with Typhoon Haiyan disaster relief effort. I'm doing it, I hope you will too!”
Ellen DeGeneres, always fond of Filipino talents said “The devastation from Typhoon Haiyan is heartbreaking. You can help the Red Cross relief efforts here. http://ellen.tv/1eEHWER ” The Voice host Christina Aguilera tweeted “Let’s help families hit by typhoon #haiyan . My friends @WFP are on the ground. Help here http://wfp.org/typhoon . Thank you! XoXtina”.
This was capped off, unsurprisingly, by a message from Pope Francis, saying “We remember the Philippines, Vietnam and the entire region hit by Typhoon Haiyan. Please be generous with prayers and concrete help.”
Even sports celebrities like Mike Tyson never escaped this devastating news, tweeting "My heart goes out to the everyone affected by the horrible typhoon in the Philippines. I'm sending my prayers to you." And, in a class act never seen by the Filipino people before, the undefeatable boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. expressed his sympathy to the Flipinos, tweeting "My thoughts and prayers are with everyone in the Philippines," while including a CNN article detailing the damage made by the storm Haiyan. Mayweather famously used to trade tirades with Filipino boxing champion Manny Pacquiao.
NBA team Miam Heat’s coach, Erik Spoelstra, also shared his support tweeting "We would like to express our condolences to the people affected by Super Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, on behalf of the Miami Heat organization," Spoelstra is half-Filipino.
Currently, local and international reliefs and rescue operations continue to outpour in the country to alleviate the damage in a scale never before seen since the Indian Ocean Earthquake Tsunami in 2004 and the Japan Tsunami in 2011.
