Jaeger Head Is Del Torro’s Torture Machine

Everyone will notice that, unlike its Japanese mecha counterparts Neon Genesis Evangelion and Gundam which all feature closed and snug cockpits, the upcoming robots vs. monster film Pacific Rim showcases a rather open and a bit wider room for the pilots.

This is because, according to director Guillermo del Toro in the newly released three minute, 51-second featurette, he wanted it to be more specious, dangerous, and physically unstable, “like pilots in a thank during World War II”.

And the result is a four-storey high movable and shakable Jaeger head that also serves as the cockpit, capable of dropping 15 feet rapidly, and being pumped with 200 gallons of water every minute, showing the pilots in different aspects of getting tumbled and wet. A “little amusement park simulator” and at the same a “torture machine” according to the director.

And the effects are impressive. If the Jaeger swings a punch, they also swing. If it falls, they get tumbled down. Basically, a trademark of del Torro’s impressive craftsmanship and realism. No wonder fans everywhere are getting exited.
