Microsoft has mass emailed its over 100 million users of Messenger to let them know about the change. Microsoft will shut down Messenger on March 15, 2013 and all Messenger customers will be migrated to Skype. Skype was acquired by Microsoft in May 2011. The only place that Messenger will remain active is mainland China.
