While the nerds and fanboys of the Western World is gearing up for the sequels of the blockbuster comic book movies, the otakus at Japan are also highly anticipating a sequel to one of the most successful movie adaptations of their manga (Japanese comics) in recent years; Rurouni Kenshin.

Originally based from Nobuhiro Watsuki's popular work, and then translated into anime (Japanese animation), “Rurouni Kenshin” (“Kenshin the Wanderer”) is about a political assassin, Himura Kenshin, who gave up killing and instead protect the weak as a change of heart.

Produced by Warner Bros., the film garnered US$36.7 million in Japan alone during its 2012 release and US$25 million in its limited international release, grossing a total US$61.7 million, making it one of the most successful and highest-grossing movies in the country. And come summer of 2014, the next installment, tentatively titled “Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc” will be hitting the theaters.

The story will follow Kenshin’s clash with the Juppon-Gatana (Ten Swords), a group of highly skilled swordsmen assembled and lead by Shishio Makoto, a former political killer like Kenshin, who returns to avenge himself from the betrayal by the very government he served.

The sequel will star “Death Note”'s Tatsuya Fujiwara in the role of Shishio Makoto. “Tantei Gakuen”’s Ryunosuke Kamiki will take the role of Soujirou Seta, Shishio’s right-hand man. Shishio’s assistant and lover will be played by Maryjun Takahashi of “Rich Man, Poor Woman”. “While Kamen Rider OOO”’s Ryousuke Miura will play Sawagejo Cho, the sword hunting member of Juppon-Gatana.

“Honey & Clover”’s Yusuke Iseya will take the role of another major character, Aoshi Shinomori, the tormented leader of the Oniwabanshū, a group of elite ninjas serving the government, while “The Twilight Samurai”’s Min Tanaka will play Okina, Aoshi’s mentor turned mortal enemy.

Takeru Satoh and Emi Takei will both reprise their roles as Himura Kenshin and Kamiya Kaoru, his love interest, respectively.
