Advancements in warfare, technology, and education were significant for the Army during this 50-year time span. West Point modernized its curriculum, focusing on scientific methods & military theory, meanwhile staff colleges were established for officer development. The 1916 National Defense Act, expanded the size of the Army, established the National Guard as the primary reserve force for the Army, and established the Reserve Officer Training Corps. The Army fully took advantage of the Industrial Revolution’s transformation of the battlefield during this period which saw the advent of modern technologies and weapons such as machine guns (Maxim & Colt), tanks, and the development of the Army Air Corps. They could also mobilize and move troops rapidly, allowing the 20th century Army to have a global reach.
