Milano recently confirmed that the animator for Ariel based the character from her own looks. Pictures of Milano when she was a child at that time were used to make the features of the little mermaid.

Milano herself stated that she was not aware of it at that time, but is proud to say that she had even a small part in the making of a Disney Princess.
