Au Gratin Potatoes are one of the all-time favorite comfort foods. It has wonderful layers of cheese sauce, sliced potatoes, seasonings and milk. It is so simple- throw those box potatoes away and make this with fresh ingredients for a delicious side dish
Ingredients
- 3 lb. red potatoes, scrubbed and cut into 1/4 inch slices
- 4 T. unsalted butter
- 1/4 c. all-purpose flour
- 1 t. kosher salt
- 1/2 t. onion powder
- 1/2 t. fine ground black pepper
- 2 c. 2% milk
- 12 oz. Colby-Jack cheese, shredded (divided)
Steps
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Butter a 1 1/2 qt. casserole dish. Set aside.
- Scrub and cut potatoes into 1/4 inch slices. Place in a large bowl of cold water.
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt butter. Add flour. Whisk to combine and cook for 2 minutes. Add spices and milk. Whisk to combine. Cook until mixture begins to thicken. Add 8 oz. cheese and stir to combine. Once cheese is melted and smooth, add about 1 c. to casserole dish.
