This beautiful cake has a custard layer that makes it magical! Serve for dessert, a snack or even for brunch!
1/2 c.unsalted butter
2 c. milk
4 eggs, separated
4 drops white vinegar
1 1/4 c. confectioner's sugar plus more for dusting
1 T. water
1 c. flour
1 t. vanilla extract
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Butter or grease an 8 x 8 baking pan.
Melt butter; set aside to cool.
Warm milk to lukewarm; set aside.
Whip egg whites and drops of vinegar to stiff peaks; set aside.
Beat egg yolks and sugar until light. Mix in melted butter and water for 2 minutes or until evenly mixed.
Mix in flour. Slowly beat in milk and vanilla until mixed.
Fold in the egg whites, a third at a time. Repeat until all egg whites are folded in.
Pour batter into the greased pan; bake for 45-60 minutes or till top is golden.
Let cake cool before cutting, then dust with confectioner's sugar. Serve.
