These baked beans will make your kitchen smell great while they are baking. They aren't overly sweet and have a slightly different flavor than regular baked beans. They can be prepared in advance, if desired, and refrigerated.
3 bacon slices, fried and crumbled
1 small yellow onion, diced
2-3 garlic cloves, minced
32 oz. canned pork and beans
1/2 c. root beer (NOT DIET)
1/4 c. hickory-smoked BBQ sauce
1/2 t. dry mustard
1/8 t. hot sauce or Tabasco sauce
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Lightly grease a 1 quart baking dish.
Fry bacon in a skillet over medium heat until crisp; remove and drain on paper towels, reserving 2 T. drippings in skillet. Crumble bacon.
Sauté diced onion and garlic in hot bacon drippings in a skillet over high heat 5 minutes or until tender. Stir together onion, crumbled bacon, beans, and remaining ingredients in the prepared baking dish.
Bake beans, uncovered, for 55 minutes or until sauce is thickened.
