Description
Onions are not usually the star side dish of your dinner, but they will be with this fantastic onion gratin. It's quick and simple to make and so delicious, you'll wish that you had made it sooner.
Ingredients
- 2 red onions (Vidalia or yellow would be good as well)
- olive oil
- 2 T. unsalted butter, divided
- 1 T. all-purpose flour
- 2/3 c. heavy cream
- 3 T. dry sherry
- salt, to taste
- garlic powder, optional
- freshly ground black pepper
- dash of nutmeg
- handful of fresh thyme
- 1 c. shredded Gruyere cheese
- 1/2 c. fresh breadcrumbs
Steps
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
- Peel onions; slice thickly.
- Heat a grill pan until very hot; brush onion slices lightly with olive oil; grill 1-2 minutes on each side until slightly softened and have nice grill marks. Set aside.
