The secret to this great recipe is root beer! It adds a fantastic depth of unexpected flavor that takes a typical baked bean recipe to the next level. You won't be disappointed.
non-stick cooking spray
3 slices bacon
1 small onion, diced
32 oz. canned pork and beans
4 oz. root beer
1/4 c. hickory-smoked barbecue sauce
1/2 t. dry mustard
1/8 t. hot sauce
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Lightly grease a 1-quart baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.
Fry the bacon in a skillet over medium heat until crisp; remove and drain on a paper towel lined plate, reserving 2 T. bacon drippings in the skillet. Crumble the bacon.
Sauté the diced onion in the hot bacon drippings in skillet over high for 5 minutes or until tender. Add the crumbled bacon, beans and remaining ingredients in the prepared baking dish; stir.
Bake the beans, uncovered, for 55 minutes or until the sauce is thickened.
