Cake:
1 box of Devil’s food cake mix
21 oz. can cherry pie filling
1 t. almond extract
2 eggs
1/4 c. milk
Frosting:
1 c. sugar
5 T. butter
1/3 c. milk
1 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9 × 13 inch pan; set aside.
In a large bowl, combine cake mix, cherry pie filling, almond extract, eggs and milk; mix with an electric mixer, just until combined. If wanting whole cherries in the cake, mix the batter by hand.
Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until wooden toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Let cool.
Frosting:
In a small saucepan, combine sugar, butter and milk; bring to a boil. Continue boiling for 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove pan from heat; stir in chocolate chips until smooth. Immediately pour over cooled cake.
Serve, topped with candied or maraschino cherries, if desired.
