Serve this festive beverage during the holiday season or even on cold winter days and nights.
1/3 c. unsweetened cocoa powder
1 quart milk
1/2 c. (3 oz.) semi-sweet chocolate chips
7 peppermint sticks; 4 whole, 3 crushed (1/4 c.)
pinch of salt
mini-marshmallows or whipped cream, for serving, optional
Place cocoa in a medium saucepan; gradually whisk in milk until cocoa has dissolved. Add chocolate chips and crushed peppermint.
Simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until chocolate and peppermint have melted, 8-10 minutes. Bring to a boil; immediately remove from heat. Add salt.
To serve, ladle into mugs; serve each with a peppermint stick and whipped cream or mini-marshmallows, if desired.
4 servings.
*For a sweeter version, add a bit of sugar in the saucepan with the cocoa.
