If you have never made your own butter, you are in for a treat. It's quick and easy and so much better than store bought. It could be a fun activity for kids to help with too!
1 c. heavy cream, 38% fat content
cold water
salt, honey and/or herbs as desired
Pour heavy cream into a pint sized Mason or other jar, filling it half full. Screw on the lid. Shake for about 5-7 minutes. After the first 2 minutes, you'll have whipped cream. Keep shaking until you hear that a lump has formed inside, then shake 30-60 seconds after that.
Remove the solids from the jar; the remaining liquid is buttermilk. Save the buttermilk or discard it.
Place the solids into a small bowl. Pour cold water over the butter; use your hands to squish it into a ball; discard water; repeat rinsing 2 more times.
Now you have butter.
Add in ingredients like salt, honey, and herbs to create flavored butter, or serve it as is.
Makes 1/2 cup of butter.
