Downton Abbey lovers, this recipe is for you. It's like a cake but in the shape of a loaf of freshly baked bread. It's so good, you may just want to host a tea with your friends.
Bread:
3/4 c. milk
1 T. fresh lavender, finely chopped (or a little more than 1 T. dried, but not as flavorful as fresh)
6 T. butter softened
1 c. sugar
2 eggs
1/2 t. vanilla extract
2 c. all-purpose flour
1 1/2 t. baking powder
1/2 t. salt
Glaze:
1/3 c. sifted powdered sugar
1 t. water
1/4 t. vanilla extract
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease and flour a 9 × 5 inch loaf pan.
Combine milk and lavender in a small saucepan over medium heat; heat to a simmer; remove from heat; allow to cool slightly.
In a medium bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth; beat in the eggs until mixture is light and fluffy; add in vanilla. Combine flour, baking powder and salt; stir into the creamed mixture alternately with milk and lavender until just blended. Pour into the prepared pan.
Bake 45-50 minutes.
Glaze:
Combine powdered sugar and remaining glaze ingredients; spread over hot cake. Cool in the loaf pan 20 minutes on a wire rack; remove from pan; cool completely on wire rack.
4-6 servings.
*Fresh and dried lavender can usually be found a health food stores.
