This 1950's recipe is perfect for special occasions. It's the best chocolate cake ever. It's moist and flavorful. Frost it with the Brown Sugar Frosting or your favorite icing.
1 c. water
1 c. mayonnaise (NOT reduced-fat or fat-free mayonnaise)
1 t. vanilla extract
2 c. all-purpose flour
1 c. sugar
1/4 c. baking cocoa
2 t. baking soda
Brown Sugar Frosting:
1/2 c. packed brown sugar
1/4 c. butter, cubed
2 T. milk
1-3/4 c. powdered sugar
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9x9 or 11x7 inch baking pan.
In a large bowl, combine water, mayonnaise and vanilla until well blended.
In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa and baking soda; gradually beat into mayonnaise mixture until blended.
Pour into the prepared baking pan. Bake a for 30-35 minutes or until a wooden toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool completely.
Frosting:
In a small saucepan, cook and stir brown sugar in butter until bubbly; remove from heat; stir in milk; gradually add powdered sugar; beat until smooth. Frost cake.
