Celebrate Love with these homemade hand pies. They're like a cross between a pop tart, a pie or a filled cookie. Fill with the homemade jam or with store bought jam, whichever you prefer, then decorate them with sprinkles or messages written in white choc
Pies:
4 store-bought refrigerated pie crusts from 2 boxes
3/4 c. strawberry citrus jam (see recipe below) or store bought strawberry jam
Egg Wash:
1 egg
1 T. water
Glaze:
2 ½ c. powdered sugar
zest of 2 blood oranges
1/3 c. freshly squeezed blood orange juice
sprinkles, optional
white chocolate, melted
5” heart cookie cutter
Homemade Strawberry Citrus Jam:
2 heaping c. fresh organic strawberries, hulled and rinsed
juice from 2 Cara Cara oranges
Pies:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
Remove pie crusts from packages. Flatten with a rolling pin.
Using a 5 inch heart cookie cutter, cut out 12 hearts. Place 1 T. jam in center of 12 hearts.
Make an egg wash by cracking an egg into a bowl; add 1 T. water; whisk; brush egg wash on exposed edges of crust around jam.
Top jam filled hearts with remaining pie crusts; press to close. Use a fork to prick edges to seal; brush tops of hearts with remaining egg wash.
Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
While pies are baking, make glaze.
Glaze:
Whisk together powdered sugar, zest and blood orange juice.
Once pies are baked and have cooled, top with glaze. While glaze is still wet, decorate with sprinkles. Or, write messages on top of pies using melted white chocolate.
