The story goes that this cocktail was invented in Florence, Italy by an Italian count. It's considered to be an apéritif, a classic way for Italians to open a meal to stimulate the appetite.
1 oz. high end gin
1 oz. Campari
1 oz. sweet or semi-sweet red vermouth
orange peel, for a garnish
Prosecco, optional
Pour all ingredients into a mixing glass with ice; stir until well chilled. Strain into an Old Fashioned glass filled with large ice cubes or straight up in a Martini glass.
Garnish with an orange twist. For a more celebratory cocktail, top with a bit of Prosecco.
