9 oz. semi-sweet chocolate chips
4 large eggs, separated
powdered sugar, for dusting
vanilla ice cream, optional for serving
seasonal fresh fruit, optional for serving
Preheat oven to 325°F. Grease a round cake pan, then line it with parchment paper.
Add chocolate chips to a microwave-safe bowl; melt completely, for about 1 minute.
Separate egg yolks from the whites. Use an electric hand mixer to whisk the whites until soft peaks form.
Add the egg yolks, 1 at a time, to the bowl of the melted chocolate; stir to combine.
Use a rubber spatula to gently fold one third of the whipped egg whites at a time into the chocolate mixture.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan; smooth the top.
Bake 30 minutes.
When the cake is cool to the touch, gently invert it onto a serving plate. Dust with powdered sugar.
Slice and serve with ice cream or fresh fruit, if desired.
