Serve this classic dish as an appetizer or as a side dish. They are easy and quick to prepare.
1 t. salt
1 t. black pepper
2 T. garlic powder
1 c. breadcrumbs
1 c. flour
3 eggs, beaten
1/2 c. buttermilk
4 large green tomatoes, sliced
2 c. vegetable oil
Add salt, pepper, garlic powder, and breadcrumbs to a bowl; stir. Set aside.
Pour flour on a platter or in a shallow bowl; set aside.
In a bowl, beat 3 eggs; whisk in buttermilk. Dip sliced tomatoes in the flour, then the egg mixture, then the breadcrumbs. Repeat until all tomato slices are coated in the breadcrumb mixture.
Heat oil in a large pot over medium heat. When oil is hot, add the tomatoes in batches; cook 2 minutes per side. Repeat until all of the tomatoes are fried.
Serve with your favorite creamy sauce, if desired.
