Christmas Crack Saltine Toffees

Description

Make your own candy to celebrate the holidays or bring as a hostess gift with this easy recipe. Just make a simple butter brown sugar mixture, spread it over saltine crackers and top with your favorite toppings.

Ingredients

40 saltine crackers (can sub club crackers, soda crackers, or Ritz crackers)
1 c. unsalted butter, NOT margarine
1 c. packed light brown sugar
12 oz. semi-sweet chocolate chips (or white chocolate, if preferred)

Optional Toppings:
flaky sea salt, chopped nuts, crushed pretzels, crushed candy canes, M&M's, chopped Reese's, sprinkles, toffee bits

Preheat oven to 425 F. Line a rimmed cookie sheet with aluminum foil.

Fill cookie sheet with the 40 crackers in a single layer.

In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, melt butter and brown sugar together; bring to a boil, stirring occasionally until combined and sugar is melted. Continue to boil undisturbed for 5 minutes.*

Remove from heat. Pour caramel mixture over the cracker layer, spreading out with a spoon as needed to cover them evenly.

Bake for 4-5 minutes, or until just bubbly.Remove from oven.

Sprinkle immediately with chocolate chips. When chips begin to melt, spread over the crackers. If adding toppings, add them now while the chocolate is still melted.

Transfer cookie sheet to the refrigerator until firm, about 2 hours.

Break into pieces. Store in an airtight container.

48 pieces.

*The caramel mixture should reach a temperature of 270-290 F to be at a soft crack state. Use a candy thermometer for best results.
