This incredibly delicious chocolate icing hardens and results in chocolate chunks that will melt in your mouth. It's best to use on a sheet cake.
1 1/2 c. sugar
7 T. whole milk
2 T. Crisco shortening
2 T. butter
1/4 t. salt
1 t. vanilla extract
1/2 c. cocoa powder
Bake your cake and let it cool completely; set aside.
In a large saucepan, combine sugar, milk, shortening, butter, and salt; bring to a rolling boil over medium-high heat, stirring constantly to prevent scorching.*
Once it reaches a boil, let it boil for 2-3 minutes without stirring.
Remove from heat; immediately whisk in the vanilla and cocoa powder; whisk until the icing is smooth and starts to lose its shine.
Immediately pour the icing onto the cooled cake while it's still in the pan. Do not spread it.
Allow it to cool before serving.
12 servings.
*Tip: Make sure that the icing comes to a rolling boil and then stay right there, timing it. You may want to add 1 minute to be on the safe side, but don’t go over this because the icing will scorch.
