Celebrate Halloween with these yummy treats. They are easy to make and so delicious even Snow White would have enjoyed them.
3 c. white granulated sugar
1 c. + 2 T. water
3/4 c. corn syrup
black food coloring
6 Granny Smith apples
3/4 t. salt
1 t. vanilla extract
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper; set aside.
Place the sugar, water, and corn syrup in a saucepan. Add the black food coloring.
Heat over medium-high, stirring the mixture to combine.
Place a candy thermometer in the saucepan; continue heating until the mixture reaches 290 degrees F, about 8-10 minutes.
Wash the apples; remove the stems; dry. Push a wooden dowel stick all the way down into the center of each apple.
Once the candy coating reaches 290 degrees F, remove it from the heat; add the salt and vanilla extract; stir.
Dip each apple into the saucepan; swirl several times to get a thick, dark black coating; lift and let the excess drip off.
Work quickly when dipping the apples, because the candy coating hardens quickly. If it does start to harden, put it back on the heat and stir until it softens up.
Place the apples on the prepared baking sheet. Let apples cool until hardened.
