It's amazing how a few simple ingredients like sweetened condensed milk, toffee bits and chocolate can make such a decadent dessert. It's layers of sweet and salty all wrapped up in one simple treat.
Crust:
1 c. salted butter, cold
2 c. all-purpose flour
1/4 c. granulated sugar
2 c. chocolate chips
1/2 c. toffee bits
Topping:
1 1/2 c. toffee bits
14 oz. can sweetened condensed milk
pinch sea salt, if desired
Crust:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease or line a 9x13 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving some overhang for easy removal.
Cut butter into small cubes; place in a large bowl. Add the flour and sugar. Use a pastry blender or 2 knives to cut the butter into the flour mixture until it forms a crumbly dough. Stir in the toffee bits. Press the mixture firmly into the prepared pan.
Bake the crust for 22-25 minutes, or until it turns a light golden brown. Remove it from oven, but keep the oven on; immediately sprinkle the 2 c. chocolate chips evenly over the hot crust. Sprinkle the 1 c. toffee bits on top; drizzle the sweetened condensed milk evenly over the entire surface.
Topping:
Sprinkle on the remaining 1/2 c. toffee bits.
Return the pan to the oven. Bake for another 15-17 minutes, or until the top is lightly browned, and the edges are bubbly.
Sprinkle a pinch of sea salt all over the top while the bars are still warm, if desired.
Allow the bars to cool completely in the pan on a wire rack.
Cut into 12 squares. Serve.
