“The value of a person does not depend on what he does or produces. (…) Medicine must never become the servant of planned death!”

With these words, POPE LEO XIV addressed the members of the Jérôme Lejeune Foundation — the French geneticist who discovered the cause of Down syndrome in 1959. As a pioneer of modern genetics, Lejeune spent his life striving to ensure that his discoveries were not turned against life, which medicine is by its very nature supposed to serve. It was his friendship with John Paul II and their shared vision of defending life that later gave rise to the establishment of the Pontifical Academy for Life.

Where do you think the mission of medicine to protect life ends and the temptation to decide on its value begins?
