For most of us, it must be considered a crime against humanity that a once-in-a-decade hit like “Breaking Bad” will have to end after just five intense seasons, forever denying us of an Emmy Award-winning masterpiece (at least “Law & Order” was nicer, indulging us with 20 seasons) that should have continued on giving us a unique spectacle to the otherwise zombie apocalypse-saturated television.

And now the resounding question is “why does it have to end?”

Thomas Schnauz, one of the writers of the series delves into this query and gave a glimpse of what the answer would be, and mind you, it was pure genius. They chose to follow a writer’s rule: never to compel the characters in any direction of the story. They have to let them take us there. Now Walt was taking us to the end of the road. And come on, he is the one who knocks; he will definitely have his say.

In an industry where eternally extending a series as long as it is rocking in the ratings and bringing in advertisers until it is already a pile of thinly-spread, unfitting story (Smallville, can you hear us?), Breaking Bad’s writers are smart enough to do what is necessary, to have its last hurrah while it is still relevant and worth watching.

And come to think of it, Heisenberg (I like that name better) is on the path of self –destruction, albeit for his family. As Schnauz stated it, he is already reaping what he sown, paying it in a true sense of poetic justice. And seeing a quick and hurting downfall of an anti-hero is a climax to watch. Extend it inappropriately and it becomes a drag.

We might feel betrayed by ending the series too early (“after this, what’s next for me?”), but the studio, the writers, and the creative team behind are doing us a favor by saying goodbye when is it still applicable. When you are still on top of the game.
