Description
Start the morning off right with this easy to make French toast. It's made with thick bread soaked in a custard mixture and served with maple syrup, raspberry preserves and powdered sugar.
Ingredients
6 extra large eggs
1 1/2 c. half-and-half or milk
1 t. grated orange zest
1/2 t. pure vanilla extract
1 T. good quality honey
1/2 t. kosher salt
1 large loaf challah or brioche bread
unsalted butter
vegetable oil
Optional for Serving:
pure maple syrup
good quality raspberry preserves, optional
sifted powdered sugar, optional

Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F.
Slice the bread into 3/4" thick slices.
In a large, shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, half-and-half, orange zest, vanilla, honey, and salt.
Soak as many slices in the egg mixture as possible for 5 minutes, turning only once.
Heat 1 T. butter and 1 T. oil in a very large saute pan over medium heat. Add the soaked bread; cook 2 to 3 minutes per side, until nicely browned.
Transfer the cooked French toast to a sheet pan; place in the oven to keep warm. Cook the remaining soaked bread slices, adding more butter and oil as needed, until it's all cooked.
Serve hot with choice of maple syrup, raspberry preserves, and/or powdered sugar.
