This is a blinged up hamburger with delicious mushroom gravy. So you can have a wonderful meal on a hamburger budget. Add mashed potatoes and a veggie for a great meal.
1 lb. lean ground beef
½ c. finely diced onion
2 c. panko bread crumbs
1 egg, lightly beaten
1 1/2 T. Worcestershire sauce
3 T. fresh parsley, minced
1 T. shallot, minced
2 cloves garlic, minced
3/4 t. freshly ground black pepper
½ t. kosher salt
2 T. butter, for frying
gravy:
1 T. butter
8 oz. sliced mushrooms
2 shallots, thinly sliced
1 T. fresh thyme leaves, minced
2 c. beef broth
2 T. flour
salt, to taste
freshly ground black pepper, to taste
fresh parsley for garnish, if desired
steak:
Combine ingredients for the steaks and form into 3 to 4 oval shaped patties. Melt butter in a skillet, saute patties 4-5 minutes on each side over medium heat until nicely browned. Remove from pan. Set aside.
gravy:
Add butter, sliced mushrooms, and shallots and saute for 4-5 minutes. Add the fresh thyme and cook another minute. Dust mixture with flour and cook for 1-2 minutes. It will be thick. Gradually stir in beef broth ½ cup at a time, allowing mixture to come to a boil in between each addition. Add more broth until desired thickness is achieved. Season with salt and pepper.
Place patties to the gravy, reduce heat to low, and allow to braise until patties are cooked through.
Serve with mashed potatoes with fresh parsley to garnish, if desired.
