Dress up those plain hamburgers with mushroom and onion gravy. Serve with mashed potatoes, rice or egg noodles.
1 1/4 lb. lean ground beef
1 egg
1/4 c. bread crumbs
1/4 t. freshly ground black pepper
1/2 t. seasoned salt
1/2 t. onion powder
1/2 t. garlic powder
2 t. Worcestershire sauce
1 T. olive or vegetable oil
1 small or medium onion, thinly sliced
2 T. all-purpose flour
1 c. beef broth or stock
1 1/2 T. cooking sherry
1/2 t. seasoned salt
chopped parsley for garnish, if desired
Mix the ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, pepper, salt, onion powder, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce in a bowl. Form into 8 patties.
Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook patties and onion in the oil until patties are nicely browned, about 4 minutes on each side. Remove the beef patties to a plate, and keep warm.
Sprinkle flour over the onions and drippings in the skillet. Stir in flour slowly with a fork, scraping bits of beef off of the bottom as you stir. Slowly stir in the beef broth and sherry. Season with seasoned salt. Simmer and stir over medium-low heat for about 5 minutes, until the gravy thickens.
Turn heat to low, return patties to the gravy, cover, and simmer for another 15 minutes.
Serve garnished with chopped parsley, if desired.
