Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

In a medium bowl, combine ground sirloin, bread crumbs, onion, onion powder, and salt. (Grate the onion over the bowl to catch all of the juices which contain lots of flavor. This is great for people who don't like onion chunks, as well.)

Evenly spread beef mixture in a 9 x 13 x 2 baking dish. Gently press the meat mixture so that it is one large patty of even thickness. Use a fork to poke holes throughout the meat.

Bake about 30 minutes. While baking, the meat will shrink away from the sides and liquid will accumulate around the edges of the pan.

When fully cooked, remove the pan from the oven, but keep the oven on.

Drain off the grease. You may be able use paper towels to blot off the liquid. Discard grease.

Top the meat with slices of cheese to cover the whole top.

Return the pan to the oven for 2 minutes or until the cheese is melted. Remove from the oven; let rest for a few minutes.

Cut into squares that will fit the size of your buns.

Serve these with dill pickle spears or slices, onion slices, ketchup, mustard and/or mayo.

Makes 9 to 15 mini-cheeseburgers.
