Sloppy Joe lovers will love these homemade sandwiches. It tastes much better and is much better for you than store-bought sloppy joe mix.
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 lb. lean ground beef or ground turkey
16 oz. tomato sauce
1 c. ketchup
1/2 c. brown sugar
4 T. Worcestershire sauce
2 t. prepared mustard
1 t. garlic powder
1/2 t. onion powder
freshly ground black pepper, to taste
8 hamburger buns
Set a large pan over medium-low heat. Add a little extra-virgin olive oil, and saute the garlic for 1-2 minutes until just fragrant and very light golden brown. Add ground beef; increase heat to medium/medium high; cook until no longer pink, breaking apart and stirring as meat cooks. Discard grease.
While meat is browning, make the sauce. In a medium bowl, stir together tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, and freshly ground black pepper, to taste, until well combined. Pour mixture over the browned meat, stir, and simmer for a few minutes until warm.
Serve on toasted/grilled hamburger buns or rolls.
Makes 8 sandwiches.
