Make an amazing grilled cheese with this recipe. French Onion Soup lovers will love turning a delicious soup into a sandwich. Serve it with more French Onion Soup, if you dare!
Soup:
10.5-oz. can beef consommé
1/2 c. water
1 medium onion, sliced
2 T. butter
1 1/2 T. cornstarch
1 1/2T. cold water
Compound Butter, for spreading:
1/4 c. butter
1/8 t. French thyme
8 t. garlic salt
Grilled Cheese:
1/4–1/2 c. French onion soup
4 slices French bread, cut 1/2" thick
4 oz. Gruyere shredded cheese
French Onion Soup:
Cook onions in butter until translucent; add consommé and water; bring to a simmer. Mix water and cornstarch together; add to consommé; stir until creamy.
Compound Butter:
Mix together butter, thyme, and garlic salt until well combined.
Assembly of Grilled Cheese:
Mix soup with shredded cheese, just until cheese is moistened. Butter one side of each slice of bread. Spread cheese mixture on unbuttered side of 2 slices of bread.
Preheat skillet over medium to low heat. Add assembled grilled cheese; cook until golden brown.
Serve with French Onion soup.
