These classic beef Sloppy Joe's are perfect for making a yummy quick meal. Using lentils gives these sandwiches a whole new dimension of taste and texture. Serve with a dill pickle and potato chips.
Ingredients
- 1 lb. lean ground beef
- 1/2 large yellow onion, minced
- 1 medium green bell pepper, minced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 T. chili powder
- 1/2 t. salt
- 1/2 t. black pepper
- 1 c. lentils, cooked (optional)
- 8 oz. can tomato sauce
- 1 c. water
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1 T. dark brown sugar
- 1 T. Dijon mustard
- 1 T. Worcestershire sauce
- 2 t. apple cider vinegar
- 1/2 t. celery seed
- 6 buns, for serving
Steps
- In a large skillet, cook beef over medium-high heat, breaking up the meat as it cooks, until browned. Transfer to a paper towel lined plate to drain.
- Reduce heat to medium; add onion and green pepper; sauté 7-8 minutes, until tender; stir in the garlic. Return the beef to the pan; stir in the chili powder, salt and pepper; cook 1 minute. Stir in the lentils, if using, tomato sauce, water, ketchup, brown sugar, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar and celery seed; mix well. Reduce heat to low. Cover; simmer 15 minutes.
- Serve on buns.
