If you have only experienced Salisbury steak in TV dinners or from the frozen food section of your grocery store, then you haven't had good Salisbury steaks. It's made from seasoned ground beef and is served with a rich brown gravy. It's simple to do and
Patties:
1 1/2 lb. ground beef
1 egg
1/4 c. minced onion
1/4 c. breadcrumbs
1 clove garlic, crushed
1/2 t. salt
1/4 t. pepper
1 small onion, sliced
6 oz. mushrooms, sliced
1 1/2 c. beef stock/broth
1 packet brown gravy mix
1 T. ketchup, optional
1 T. Dijon mustard, optional
2 T. cornstarch
Mix together the seven patty ingredients; form small patties about 3/4 of one inch thick.
Line the slow cooker with a slow cooker liner for easy clean up. Make a bed of onion and mushrooms in the lined slow cooker.
The raw patties can be placed directly into the slow cooker, but it is highly recommended that you brown them in a skillet for more flavor.
Mix all remaining ingredients (plus any drippings and bits from browning the patties), except for the cornstarch; pour over meat and vegetables. Cook on Low for 5 hours.
Remove patties; set aside. On High setting, whisk in cornstarch; cook until thickened.
Add patties back in, just to coat with sauce before serving.
