Please yourself and family with this classic, comforting Italian dish. Serve it with a salad and crusty bread or garlic bread, if desired.
16 oz. dry ziti pasta
1 T. olive oil
1 lb. hot Italian sausage
1 medium onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 - 24 oz. jars marinara/spaghetti sauce
1 c. cottage cheese
1 package cream cheese
3 c. mozzarella cheese, divided
freshly grated or shredded Parmesan cheese
fresh basil
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Cook pasta according to package directions, about 9-13 minutes; drain; set aside.
Heat olive oil in a large skillet; add onions; saute 2-3 minutes; add sausage; cook stirring occasionally, until cooked through, about 12 minutes. Discard fat; add garlic; cook 1-2 minutes. Add in spaghetti sauce; simmer 10 minutes.
In a medium bowl, add cottage cheese, cream cheese, 2 c. mozzarella cheese, 1 T. freshly chopped basil; mix until combined. Add meat mixture to pasta; mix until combined.
Pour half of the pasta mixture into a 9 x 13 inch baking dish. Add small scoops of the cheese mixture on the pasta; add the remaining pasta. Top with remaining 1 c. mozzarella cheese.
Bake uncovered for 20-30 minutes.
Garnish with freshly shredded or grated Parmesan cheese and fresh basil.
Serve.
