This is an easy, economical and tasty dish to serve to your family. It's ready in about 45 minutes and could be served with potatoes, rice or pasta to take advantage of the wonderful gravy.
Hamburger:
1 lb. ground beef
1 egg
1/4 c. breadcrumbs
½ -1 t. pepper
1 t. salt
2 T. minced or grated onion that is grated over a bowl to catch all of the juices
1 t. minced garlic
Mushroom Onion Gravy:
2 T. all-purpose flour
1 c. beef broth/stock
½ c. water
2 T. butter
1 – 1 ½ c. sliced mushrooms
1 c. thinly sliced onion
1 t. minced thyme
1 T. minced garlic
1/2 T. Worcestershire sauce
1 t. Creole seasoning or to taste
Hamburger Steaks:
In a large bowl, add ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, pepper, salt, garlic and grated onion and its juices. Gently combine until fully mixed. Divide into 4 to 6 portions; lightly flatten into patties; set aside.
Mushroom Onion Gravy:
In a medium bowl, whisk together flour broth/stock and water; set aside.
Heat a lightly oiled skillet on medium-high heat; cook for 2 minutes per side or until just browned. Remove patties; set aside.
Add 2 T. butter, mushrooms, sliced onion, thyme, garlic, Worcestershire sauce and Creole seasoning to the skillet; sauté 6 minutes or until tender. Add prepared gravy; bring to a boil. Return patties and drippings to skillet; season with salt and pepper, if desired. Cover; reduce heat to low; simmer 8 - 10 minutes, add more stock for desired thickness, if needed.
4-6 servings.
*Double the gravy recipe if wanting more to serve on rice, pasta or mashed potatoes.
