The Best Spaghetti Sauce

Description

You may have tried many spaghetti sauces in the past, but there's no need to look any further. This is the best spaghetti sauce ever. If desired, add more desired seasonings and spices to taste. Serve over your favorite pasta.

Ingredients

1 1/2 lb. sweet or spicy Italian sausage (or a mixture of both), casings removed
1 1/2 lb. lean ground beef
1/4 c. olive oil, divided
1 1/4 - 1/2 t. crushed red pepper flakes
3 medium onions, finely chopped
4 carrots, peeled and diced
4 ribs celery, diced
4-6 cloves garlic, finely chopped
5 1/2 oz. can tomato paste
2 - 28 oz. cans diced Italian tomatoes
2 - 28 oz. cans crushed tomatoes with purée
2 c. beef broth
2 t. dried oregano
1 t. sugar
2 - 3 cloves
salt and pepper, to taste
favorite pasta, for serving

In a large saucepan, brown meat in 2 T. oil, half at a time, with the red pepper flakes. Add more oil, if needed. Season with salt and pepper. Transfer to a bowl; set aside.

In the same saucepan, saute onions, carrots, celery and garlic in the remaining oil until soft. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Add tomato paste; cook for 1 minute over high heat.

Add meat, tomatoes, tomato sauce, broth, oregano, sugar and cloves; bring to a boil. Simmer gently, stirring and scraping the bottom of the pan regularly, for about 3 hours or until thickened.

Serve over the pasta of choice.
