Don't be afraid of the vegetables in these Sloppy Joes because they add wonderful flavor and texture to the dish. It's an easy dinner that everyone will enjoy.
1 lb. lean ground beef
1 medium yellow onion, diced
1 medium green bell pepper, diced (or any color)
2 celery ribs, diced
8 oz. tomato sauce
6 oz. tomato paste
2 T. Worcestershire sauce
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 T. brown sugar
1 t. salt
1 t. ground mustard
1/2 t. red pepper flakes
8 hamburger buns, toasted
favorite cheese slices, optional
In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook ground beef, onion, bell pepper and celery, stirring occasionally, until meat is cooked through. Discard excess grease; return skillet to heat.
Add tomato sauce, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, brown sugar, salt, ground mustard, and red pepper flakes; stir.
Bring to a simmer; reduce heat to medium-low; simmer 15 - 30 minutes, depending on desired crispness of the vegetables.
Serve on toasted buns.
