Turn the classic sloppy joe's into a casserole quickly and easily with this recipe. It's finished with a cheesy crust that takes it to the next level.
1 1/2 lb. ground beef
1 large onion, small diced
1 large green bell pepper, small diced
2 T. brown sugar
1 T. Worcestershire sauce
2 t. dry mustard
1 t. garlic salt
15 oz. can tomato sauce
3/4 c. ketchup or BBQ sauce
2 c. all-purpose flour
3 t. baking powder
1 t. salt
1 1/3 c. milk
6 T. melted butter
2 large eggs, beaten
1 1/2 c. shredded Cheddar cheese
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef until browned; discard any excess fat. Add onion and bell pepper; sauté until tender, about 5 minutes. Stir in brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, dry mustard and garlic salt. Add tomato sauce and ketchup; stir until combined. Simmer over low heat while preparing the topping.
Topping:
Add flour, baking powder and salt to a large bowl. Stir in milk, butter and eggs until well combined. Fold in cheese.
Pour the meat mixture into a 13 x 9 inch casserole dish. Evenly spread (or drop by spoonfuls) the topping over the meat mixture.
Bake 25-30 minutes or until crust is a light golden brown.
