Now you can make hamburger steaks in an onion gravy just like Cracker Barrel's. They will really hit the spot and are comfort food for sure. They are seared in a skillet and simmered in a rich, flavorful onion gravy.
Hamburger Steaks:
2 lb. lean ground beef
1 egg, beaten
1/4 c. Worcestershire sauce
1/3 c. bread crumbs
1/3 c. milk
1 t. seasoned salt
1 t. onion powder
2 t. garlic powder
non-stick cooking spray
Onion Gravy:
1 onion, sliced
1/4 c. butter
1/3 c. all-purpose flour
2 c. beef broth
Hamburger Steaks:
Place all hamburger steak ingredients in a bowl; mix well using your hands. Form mixture into 6 patties.
Spray a heavy skillet with non-stick cooking spray. Brown patties on medium-high heat for 3 minutes per side. Transfer to a platter; cover with foil to keep warm; set aside.
Onion Gravy:
Add the onions to the same skillet, adding a little more oil, if necessary. Sauté until onions start to brown; add butter; let it melt. Once the butter melts, whisk in the flour until it’s no longer visible. Cook, whisking constantly for 1 minute.
Slowly whisk in the beef broth, until no lumps remain. Bring to a simmer, whisking until thickened. Season with salt and pepper, to taste.
Transfer the beef patties back to the skillet into the gravy.
Cool on medium-low; cover; simmer for 20-30 minutes or until patties are 160 degrees F in the centers.
Remove skillet from heat; cover; let stand 5-10 minutes.
Serve with mashed potatoes, rice or egg noodles.
