Sloppy Joes are the go to meal for many busy families. Make it a bit more special by adding a not so secret ingredient, Dr. Pepper. It adds a subtle sweet tang that is delicious.
2 T. butter
1 small onion, small diced
1 small green bell pepper small diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 lb. lean ground beef
8 oz. tomato sauce
3/4 c. Dr. Pepper
2 T. ketchup
1 T. apple cider vinegar
1 T. Worcestershire sauce
1/2 t. kosher salt
1/4 t. black pepper
hamburger buns or favorite buns, for serving
In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter; add the onion and bell pepper; cook until veggies are softened, and start to brown slightly, about 10 minutes. Add the garlic; cook until fragrant, 30 seconds.
Add the ground beef, breaking it up into crumbles until no pink is left, 8-10 minutes. Discard excess fat.
Add the tomato sauce, Dr. Pepper, ketchup, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper; stir.
Bring to a simmer; lower heat to medium-low. Simmer 10 minutes until thickened but still saucy.
Adjust seasonings to taste, as necessary.
Serve immediately on favorite buns.
